Australia Supports Sporting Organisations in Fiji

7 October 2008

The Australian Government has approved just over F$24,000 for the development of sports in Fiji.

The funds are being provided through the Australian Sports Outreach Program (ASOP). This Australian Government program operates in 16 Pacific countries and is aimed at increasing community participation in sport and physical activity.

In the Northern Division, just over F$10,000 has been granted for the purchase of equipment for a public gymnasium which will come under the management of Labasa Town Council. The gym will provide new opportunities for people in Labasa, especially youth, to develop their sporting potential and their general fitness.

Fiji Swimming has also been awarded a grant of just over F$7000 to assist in developing swimming coaches. This assistance should help Fiji Swimming in its aim to ensure that only qualified coaches are appointed to work with schools and swimming clubs.

Athletics Fiji has also received a grant of F$6500 to help it expand athletics competitions to smaller towns and rural areas.
