THREAT AGAINST THE AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION
Two copies of an anonymous written threat were delivered to the Australian High Commission early in the evening of 7 May. The threat is directed primarily at the High Commissioner, James Batley.
The High Commission immediately notified responsible authorities including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Civil Aviation, and the Police. Police officers attended the High Commission promptly and have commenced an investigation.
The High Commission wishes to express its thanks for the speedy response from the Fiji Police, and for the reassurances it has received from senior government officials.
The High Commission has made appropriate security arrangements in response to the threat. The High Commission remains open for business.
The threat appears to be politically-motivated, by a person or persons who object to the Australian Government's current policy on Fiji. Needless to say, neither the High Commission nor the Australian Government will be intimidated by threats.
