AUSTRALIA FUNDS COMMUNITY PROJECTS
26 March 2008
The Australian High Commission has approved a further round of funding for community projects totalling close to F$100,000. The funds have come from the High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP).
Projects to receive funding include:
• Two youth development projects in Levuka and Labasa
• Two women’s projects in Suva and in Nausori
• Two water projects in Rewa and in Kadavu
• A footpath and drainage project in Serua
• Assistance to Taveuni Hospital
• Assistance with palliative care training for the Fiji Cancer Society
Australian High Commissioner James Batley said the Direct Aid Program (DAP) was used for funding small projects which directly targetted community-level activities. As such, the DAP complemented Australia’s larger programs of assistance in Fiji, for instance in the areas of health, education, support to civil society organisations, and support for private sector development.
Mr Batley said he was pleased that the latest round of DAP projects covered a number of different provinces, and a range of different activities.
